The funny thing about creativity

When I was younger, I used to struggle endlessly when a teacher would provide a creative writing assignment. I dreaded it more than any other work given. This persisted through university. I would have vehemently disagreed that fluid ideas would stem from my mind into a composite of words other than about my anxieties or concerns at any given moment.

Through many struggles, aspects of of my individuality cemented and perspectives formed about the world and my place within it. I realized that so many people become entrenched in the status quo and forget about pursuing their dreams or objectives. Life seems to become riddled with complications and obligations but there is always time to develop a portion of ourselves in projects. The beauty of projects is that they are iterative and completed in stages.

These films and this website developed slowly due to other obligations currently in my life. In fact, they are still in development as I write this blog. I just knew I had to do this and somehow found time to accomplish it in the middle of finishing a Master's program and starting my PhD.

My advice to others would be to just decide on what you would really like to do even if you don't have all the capabilities that you need. Then, identify the requirements and resources that you need to accomplish it. Then, teach yourself or ask for help learning about what you need to do from people around you. If you don't have anyone in your direct network then find a local group, a workshop, or a program that can help you develop the skills and expertise that you need. Sometimes, this process takes years on and off again.

Finally, trust your instincts and believe in your voice. If you don't like the results, try again. Eventually, you will get something that you are happy to share with others. Most likely, they will be incredibly grateful that you thought of them enough to include them in the process.

The thing is that this creative process actually spawned from others that I was a part of. I am so grateful for all the people involved in these projects and activities that brought me to this point. It is truly amazing how one thing leads to another. I am not sure exactly where this started for sure but it was probably a writing class that I felt I had to take to get better but didn't feel capable of at the time.
